KNU recognizes rights to land restitution for displaced communities
The Karen National Union (KNU) launched its revised Land Policy in Yangon during May. This timely policy recognizes and protects the rights to customary tenure for indigenous communities and land restitution for displaced communities.
Community-Driven Conservation in Dawei Township
TRIP NET launched a report on 24 March in Yangon documenting lessons learnt from natural resource management in contested areas. This action research examines how communities have sustainably managed watershed areas and community forests while addressing corporate threats from logging, palm oil and rubber plantations, coal mining and the Special Economic Zone.
Chronic malnutrition rates decrease
The 2015 Nutrition Survey revealed great progress in reducing stunting by 5.7% and maintaining a low level of wasting at 2.0% in the refugee camps on the Thai-Burma border since 2013. Stunting can have long-term adverse effects on a child’s life, and if not addressed before 24 months of age it is almost irreversible.
