On 29 October 2026, Léon de Riedmatten, Executive Director of The Border Consortium (TBC), delivered opening remarks at the workshop on “Sustainable Management and Future Options for Thailand’s Temporary Shelters”, held in Bangkok.

Jointly organised by the Royal Thai Government (RTG), UNHCR, UN-Habitat and TBC, the workshop brought together government representatives, camp commanders, refugee representatives and other key stakeholders to discuss the future management of temporary shelters in Thailand.
During the workshop, TBC’s Senior Management Team and the Karen Refugee Committee (KRC) shared experiences and lessons learned from previous camp relocations and consolidations, highlighting the importance of close coordination with the Royal Thai Government, refugee-led governance and meaningful community participation.
The discussions emphasised the importance of ensuring that future arrangements are safe, inclusive and sustainable, with refugee communities actively involved in decisions affecting their lives and futures.
